A Brief History of New West

Founded in 1858, New Westminster holds the distinction of being the first city established in Western Canada. Originally named by Queen Victoria after her favorite part in London, the city soon earned its moniker, “The Royal City.” Selected as the initial capital of the colony of British Columbia due to its strategic location—easily defensible against potential American incursions and offering prime access to the Fraser River—it played a pivotal role in the early development of the province.

However, by 1868, the capital shifted to Victoria, following the unification of British Columbia and Vancouver Island into a single colony. Despite this, New Westminster retained its significance in the region. Its prominence was only overshadowed when the Canadian Pacific Railway chose Vancouver as its western terminus in the late 1880s. Yet, New Westminster continued to thrive as a regional center for commerce, culture, and entertainment well into the 20th century.

Today, while Vancouver might be the more globally recognized city, New Westminster’s rich history and enduring charm make it a unique and integral part of British Columbia’s tapestry.

Growing Urban Population

Due to its history as the regions major city up to the early 20th century, New West historically been quite dense and walkable and had its own urban character distinct from its more suburban neighbours like Surrey, Burnaby, and Coquitlam. Starting with the arrival of the Expo Line Skytrain in 1986, New Westminster has seen a boom of high density urban condo development. This new condo development started in Downtown New Westminster initially around the Skytrain Stations, but now has expanded across the city. This expansion of new presale condo development in New Westminster is in large part driven by high levels of population growth in the city.

At points in its history, New Westminster was also the most populous city in British Columbia, until it was surpassed by the rapidly growing city of Vancouver in the early 1900s.  The population of New West now sits at 78,916 residents as of 2021 with an 11.2% increase since 2016 according to the 2021 Census
